Well so much for a slow news week! As many of you know Andrea and I attended the Indiana Republican Convention this past Saturday as delegates. In the only contested race, Micah Beckwith a Pastor from Noblesville, beat State Rep Julie McGuire for the LT. Governors slot on the ballot. It was relatively close since Micah won with 70 votes or so out of 1,600+ cast. It was exciting to watch, participate in and to hear the roar of the crowd when it was announced he won.
From the very moment it was announced the offended establishment began with the “Micah is the end of the Braun candidacy!” and various other hit pieces, comments, memo leaks and other nonsense we have come to expect from the entitled ruling class. I’m going to list a few of my observations and comment on what I see going forward here.
First it is clear to me that the grassroots of the party consistently has the votes to get what it wants at convention. This is three conventions in a row that the establishment has been disappointed and shocked by defeats. This is a good thing and we should be encouraged.
Secondly, Micah ran a great campaign, had name recognition and clearly articulated the concerns and desires of the base of the party. He ran for over a year traveling all over the state meeting with delegates to make his case. It was obvious to anyone paying attention that Micah was/is a serious candidate with a bright political future. The political truth is that an energized base will win elections. The base is now energized to vote for the Braun/Beckwith ticket much more than it was before.
Thirdly, Julie McGuire may be a great person. In fact I heard from a few people I trust that she in fact is a good person. It remains true at the same time however that she was an awful pick. She had zero name recognition, zero accomplishments and her first political move was to take almost $500,000 in Republican Party money to defeat a strong conservative State Rep two years ago to win her seat(Republican elites hate the base of our party). She gave a very low energy address to the delegates and it was obvious to me she was picked so as to never outshine Braun.
Braun and Beckwith will win big this November. The era of Republican governors acting like Democrats without any serious pushback is possibly coming to an end. If the establishment is angry about the Beckwith win they have only themselves to blame. Holcomb vetoed conservative and popular legislation with impunity and arrogance, advocated shutting down Churches and small businesses during Covid and we were powerless it seemed to fight back. The failure of Suzanne Crouch as Lt. Governor to speak up and to disagree publicly and forcefully with Holcomb is what doomed her candidacy in my opinion.
Okay so to switch gears real quick. Jimmy and I are going to do a live podcast July 11th at the Vigo County Fair. It’s a Thursday evening and we will be either in or around the Republican shed. Yes I know it sounds funny talking about the Republicans being in a shed but in fairness the Democrats have one too. Maybe the public is sending the message that both our parties belong in the woodshed?? Details will follow as far as time but we would love for you to stop by in person, say hello or tune in live.
